Deck Options Guide

Your deck, simplified.

Every deck is made up of thousands of individual components: pieces of lumber and composite, metal brackets, fasteners, and bolts. With some of these items, we don't budge: exterior-grade hardware only, for example. Yet there are still many choices to be made. To simplify this process, we divide the typical deck into four categories:
  1. Structure: your deck's frame
  2. Decking: the surface that you walk on and will see for the life of your deck
  3. Railing: what both finishes the perimeter of your deck and keeps you safely on top
  4. Accessories: upgrades, built-ins, and options to make it yours
Each of these categories are explored in greater detail below with additional information, pros and cons, relative price point (cheapest options on left, most expensive on right), and of course, pictures.

Structure: natural or finished

Picture
Pressure-treated lumber: our standard deck framing material. It's Douglas Fir lumber that has been treated with a wood preservative to resist rot and insects. It has a rustic look (due to the chemical injection marks) and comes pre-stained a reddish-brown. Installed properly, it will last for decades.
Picture
Primed, painted, and flashed Douglas Fir: when the underside of the deck is visible and the look more critical, we go through several steps to make the finer-looking "surfaced" Douglas Fir lumber suitable for many years of outdoor exposure: a coat of primer, a coat or two of paint, and flexible flashing that seals the top edge of the beams and joists so that water sheds off the wood rather than soak in. A cleaner, more custom look and with several layers of protection that will rival the durability of pressure-treated lumber.

Decking: materials and patterns

Trex composite decking

Picture
Trex Select: a basic looking composite board, but with industry-leading technology and warranty. This plastic and wood based product is capped to create a scratch-resistant finish that is guaranteed not to fade or stain for 35 years. Available in two monochromatic colors and three streaked colors.
Picture
Trex Transcend & Trex Lineage: thicker than Select and with improved aesthetics. A more realistic grain pattern and twelve colors that incorporate random streaking for a convincing natural look. Trex ups their warranty to 50 years for this thicker board and thicker shell product.
Picture
Trex Signature: Trex created a whole new class with this "Luxury" decking board. A printed grain takes the natural look to a whole new level. Both bullet-proof and beautiful, Signature decking comes in the warm wood-tone "Ocracoke" or the cool beachy "Whidbey". Also backed by a 50 year warranty.

Wood decking

Picture
Redwood: the cheapest decking we install, but also beautiful, long-lasting, and a classic California material. Requires regular cleaning and re-staining to keep up on look and longevity.
Picture
Mangaris: an entry-level hardwood deck board with rich red hues. Because of it's density, Mangaris is naturally rot and termite-resistant, as well as being fire-rated. Requires annual oiling to maintain color.
Picture
Ipe: known as the hardest wood in the world. Browner than Mangaris, and with all the same qualities and more. Oil regularly to keep up on color and brightness, or let it weather and turn to a silver patina.
